Workshop on Popular Science Writing under DST AWSAR held at IITD

A one-day sensitization workshop on ‘Popular Science Writing’ under DST AWSAR (Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research) program for PhD scholars and Post Doc Fellows was organised at IIT Delhi.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Ashutosh Kumar, Secretary, DST and Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi.

Under the AWSAR initiative, PhD Scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs) in Science and Technology (S&T) streams would be encouraged to write at least one popular science article during the tenancy of their fellowship, and to participate in a national competition.

Dr Ashutosh Kumar, Secretary, DST said: “Science popularization can be at its best when communicated directly in an interesting format by a PhD scholar based on her or his area of research and how it connects to the proximal areas of science and the larger concerns of science and society. AWSAR is an effort in that direction which in its first launch last year received some 3500 popular science stories written by PhDs and post docs! It would obviously also benefit the writer enormously.”

Salient features of the workshop included:

  • Significance of communicating science in popular writing format
  • Differentiating technical and popular writing.
  • Hand-on experience about how to write popular science story.
